ABOUT THE BOOK

"There HAS to be more for me!" - a phrase innocently exclaimed in our latest publication and yet deeply telling of the need for more gender diverse representation in children's literature in India. 

Our second children's book, The Many Colours of Anshu, is written and illustrated by Anshuman Sathe. Inspired by their own life experiences as a non-binary person, Anshuman narrates the story of a seven-year-old self who embarks on a journey to break free from the gendered blue into a world of colourful possibilities. "I spent my whole life rebelling against the limited and limiting idea of boyhood.... I needed more ways of being a kid which went beyond just 'boy' or girl'," says Anshuman.

Offering readers a world vibrant with colour, Anshuman bears no burden of concluding in black and white. This book is perfect for parents, caregivers, and educators seeking to initiate conversations about gender play and to equip their children with self-love and self-empathy.

For 14 years now, Gaysi Family has been a platform for queer, desi voices with a keen interest in storytelling with ever evolving rosters of formats - theater, spoken word, zines, and more recently children's literature. The Many Colours of Anshu is for both children (7+ years or younger if read to) and adults. The intent behind this book is to create a vulnerable, safe, and playful space of self-expression that is free from judgment and censorship.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR

Anshumaan Sathe is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Mumbai. They believe in the power of art and storytelling to change the world and expand the way we think about gender, love and identity. They hope to be the parent of several cats by the age of 25.
